The Concho Valley Partnership and State Representative Drew Darby partnered to create the Legislative Leadership Academy (LLA) to encourage students to be scholars, leaders, and community partners. The program will teach 20 students to be well rounded citizens by emphasizing that successful adults combine scholarship, leadership, and community involvement.
Students were selected to participate in the program through an application and interview process. Students began the LLA by participating in an orientation session that describes the program. They then participated in several workshops for students that explore the following topics: Leadership Traits, Community Involvement, Ethics, and Employment Skills. The students visited the Capitol of Texas and were introduced in the House Gallery. They toured the Capitol, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and the Capitol Visitor's Center.
Finally, students will attend Howard College during the first summer session (June 6 through June 30, 2011). Students will attend classes four days a week from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The students will take a Public Speaking 3 hour course and a Learning Frameworks 1 hour course. Students will pay $25.00 to attend Howard College and earn the 4 hours of credit. Howard College will provide a scholarship to each student that covers the remaining tuition, books, and fees.
Information about the 2011-2012 Program will be distributed to schools in October 2011. If you would like to receive this information, click here.
